My downloads refreshed today on eMusic, and I headed over to grab some new tracks. I knew of a couple that I wanted so I was pretty quickly able to try a download, and was presented with an update notice for the eMusic download software. After downloading the update I noticed that the installer was going to install something called eMusic Remote.
Install went smooth, and when I fired up the new software I was presented with a completely new program with a completely new interface. I don’t have a screen shot of the old download manager but you can see one on this blog posting. The new program I have come to learn is a XUL based, open source manager that integrates with WMP, iTunes, and WinAmp to automagically add downloaded tunes to these players. You can read a bit more about the new manager on the eMusic site. Since this new tool is basically just a little Firefox browser, you can install addins. Not sure why you would want to do that, but I was able to install FoxyTunes.
So I noticed that when I fired up WMP after installing this new download manager, that WMP also offered to install eMusic as my preferred music store. Instead of the Urge store icon I know see eMusic. It does not seem to want to save my password though which is pretty annoying.
One of the new features, I guess a primary feature, of the new software is the ability to automatically add new tracks to your media player to aid in transfer to a portable device. That didn’t work for me. As a matter of fact, manually adding the new files didn’t work either…kinda weird.
Looks like it will be a pretty nice piece of software, once I get all the quirks worked out.
