It has been about 4 years now since I took my box with thousands of MtG cards to E-bay, and walked out with a nice 500.00 payment. I had been playing since the days of the beta set and had a few of the most rare cards in the box. Thing is, I was not playing the game any more, they were just taking up space, and that 500.00 helped me to get a number of games that I actually play.
Fast forward to this morning. I am reading through my RSS feeds and come across a post on d21 Gaming that made me think about Magic again. Melissa and I used to play Magic or Spellfire while sitting around and watching Dr. Who. Other times we would just play a quick game to play. The nice thing about CCG’s is that if you have a deck available, and two people who know the rules pretty well, it makes for fast setup and play. I like that.
I actually have cards for two or three ccg’s currently around the house. I have cards for Spellfire still, cards for Duel Masters, and cards for the Call of Cthulhu game. I don’t play those games, but I guess I could. None of them are in deck format. The appeal of Magic though is that I can also take my deck(s) any where and find a game. Hrm….
I am considering the purchase of a couple of the 10th edition constructed decks and maybe a box of boosters. Am I crazy? Is it a slippery slope into the type of addiction described in the d21 article? Perhaps so, but I think I will do it anyway. Heck maybe it will encourage me to build decks for Duel Masters and Spellfire as well.

I just posted a story last week about Magic cards that might interest you. It is true by the way.

No, this is really not spam. I thought you might get a kick out of the story.
Hi Sean - It was nice to meet you today @ Amazon Grill - I didn’t know you were a Magic player - my husband has recently gotten into! He and his buddies play…
Thanks for the article Coldfoot, I actually follow your blog, but apparently not closely enough because I missed this one. Thanks!
Cybertoad: Good to meet you as well. Until yesterday I was an Ex Magic player, but I did buy some cards yesterday.
Hi Sean,
To answer your question, yes, you are crazy to get back into Magic. I never had the intestinal fortitude to quit Magic altogether, but I did muster up the strength to refuse to buy any more cards.
The $$$-to-fun ratio on Magic cards sucks. I guess if you have money to burn, that doesn’t matter much, though.
I bet you could get a Wii to play with Melissa, and you’d probably get a better return on your investment. Lord knows my girl wants to get one of those. Or you could try a couple new boardgames.
Anyhow, since you are ‘back in’, sticking with a couple of preconstructed decks is probably the best way to go for you.
Don’t mind me Sean, I’m just bitter…
Heh…already have the Wii. I think I can keep myself from buying cards. I bought a couple of constructed decks and some boosters all from 10th edition. I have plenty now to put together 4 or 5 decks to play with. It’s not like I am going to register with DCI and go pro…i hope.
I used to play Magic too, but quit a couple of years ago. I know how it feels about the quick game and have to say it was pretty fun.
Though if i were you, i’d have never sold them cards =P
I mean, what if you happened to want another game…?
I think magic is a great game to play. I like the table top stuff better than online. I think the social aspect of gaming has been forgotten about in recent years.
