New Dell Laptop

Just completed an order for a new Dell laptop, a Inspiron 1420.  I had seriously considered waiting to see what Dell did in the Tablet PC space, but I decided that for my needs a cheaper laptop would work just fine.  I also feel, only based on my experience with my Motion Tablet, that the display on the TPC is more likely to break.  So using the EPP discount I was able to come up with a fairly good price on a new machine.  I personally think it is an amazing price for the machine specs:

Inspiron 1420
Intel® Core? 2 Duo T7100 (1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache), Genuine Windows Vista? Home Premium Edition
Spring Green
FREE! 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 14.1 inch display (1440×900)
128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8400M GS
FREE! 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Genuine Windows Vista? Home Premium Edition
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
High Definition Audio 2.0
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Webcam
85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)
3 Yr In-Home Service, Parts + Labor - Next Business Day
Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)

I am particularly surprised to have gotten the 3 year warranty.  I usually go for a lower warranty period to save money, even on laptops, but the price was cheaper the more I went up.  I think the ship date is listed as 8/8 or something like that.  The shipping delay seems to be due to the high resolution display.  I should have the machine in time for BarCamp though, which is good since it means I won’t need to drag my M90 with me.

I am happy with this purchase, and I think it will be a laptop that will still have function when that 3 year warranty is up…doubt I will be using the function then…but that is ok.  This model does come with a color lid, I went with the green color.  It should match my eBags bag.  I have not used that bag since I got the M90.  the M90 is too big for pretty much any bag.

I hope you will post your thoughts once you receive it. I’ve been eying that laptop myself. The price seems hard to beat for the specs you can load up on. The one thing that is putting me off is the slow ship time since I may need something sooner. The new 1330 is also nice, but out of my price range and has an even later ship date.

Hey Ben. Welcome. Yea I will definitly post up a review. I am thinking that I might even go the geeky route and do some sort of live streaming/uStream sort of thing. And record the opening for posterity. I agree on the price. I was going to wait till the Dell TabletPC came out in the fall to get a new laptop, but then I saw the 1330, and then came the 1420 and the price was just too hard to pass up.

I agree that the delay is enormous, especially if you go with the higher resolution display. Looking forward to it’s arrival, will report back when it is here.

I ordered the 1420 on the 19th of July and still haven’t received it — that is just crazy. Sean, have you gotten yours yet? I see your post is from July 16. I am really looking forward to receiving mine!

Christy: I have not received mine yet. Still shows an 8/16 ship date. I believe that people who ordered the upgraded display ended up with a large delay. I still keep eyeing the 1330 XPS model…who knows I might switch before it ships.

    Hey Sean,
I ordered my 1720 on July 4 and when I called yesterday to ask when it was finally going to ship…August 28. Every time I call it is 2 weeks more, and every time it is a different reason for the delay. I hope you’re a patient man.

I actually talked to Dell support this morning, and they “promised’ me that my laptop would be shipping today. I have not gotten any updates yet, and plan to check in again tonight ot verify that it did indeed ship. Got my fingers crossed.
