I really like playing RPG’s, but I just don’t seem to be able to put in much gaming recently. However, this weekend I will be getting together with the game group for a Memorial Day weekend cookout, followed by a game session we have been discussing for a while. This game session will be a MAJOR change for me as it will be played with characters starting at level 25. I have never really had much interest in epic level play, maybe it seems to be somehow less real at those high levels. : )
I purchased the Hero Lab software a while back a tool to manage my character sheets and use on my laptop during game play. It made the creation of the epic level characters pretty fun. In fact it made them very fun. I ended up creating 4 different characters over the past few months, all at 25th level, and all pretty different from each other. I had a Paladin/Dwarven Defender character, a human 6th level Rogue/ 19th level monk, and a Fighter/Cleric/Paladin goblin character with a very odd back story. I decided over the last week or two though to go with a different character. I decided to play a 5th level Ranger/20th level Druid character. Not the worlds most powerful character, but a summoning master with a Dire Lion as an animal companion. In addition to all the summoning he can do, he is pretty fond of transforming himself into different creatures. The character was inspired in part on my desire to use some of the D&D miniatures I have collected.
Creating a character at a high level really forces you to look at a variety of rules. I am not the worlds most knowledgeable d20 player, but I have some others in the group to lean on for suggestions of rules and features I might have missed (which have been numerous). I think I am about ready to play though. I have the stats for my summonings set up. I am finalizing the stats for my Dire Lion, and then I should be ready to play.
My back story is not terribly well developed. I know that I am an older person, mid to late 30’s I think, who has spent a long time out of civilization. I have a hated of Fey type creatures (kind of odd for a Druid I suppose), and I have an interest and affinity for elementals. In the interest of humor I have decided to name my character Zan Jayna, after the Wonder Twins, due to his fondness for shape changing. I also named my lion Exor, which is the Wonder Twins home planet. Suitably geeky I think.
I am looking forward to the game. I know nothing about the setting for this session, so it will be interesting to see what the dm comes up with. Character sheets for Zan and Exor are available if you are interested. The session notes for our game day on Saturday will also be available online.
