iGoogle ate my custom page

Google has re-branded the personalized homepage as iGoogle. Nothing much has changed really, just a new name, and a new gadget builder. You can follow most of the discussion on this topic on Techmeme.

I have used the personalized page from Google for a while now, and I like it for what it is worth. I thought I would personalize my page a bit more though by adding one of these new custom gadgets that are available with the gadget builder. I created a pretty simple one using the countdown sample, and accepted all of the defaults. I chose not to publish or share the widget and just added it to my page. My page that was now empty except for this new widget. OK, maybe I missed something or did something wrong. I added a few of my standard gadgets back, and created a new custom widget, this time editing the list widget with some games I have been playing recently. I choose not to publish or share the widget, added it to my page, and the same thing happened. I am back to a plain page with no other gadgets and my header reset.

I like the idea of this personalization. I think the new widgets are pretty nice, if a bit crude and manual in their creation. I don’t really like the idea of having to reset my page each time I add one. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

The i must stand for intermittent.

Same thing happened to me a few times. I got an XML error in one of my personal gadgets too. I’m going to avoid this new behavior for a while.

I finally recreated the first tab on my page the way I like it. I lost the other tabs though. I won’t be messing with it again for a long while.
