A new article on the d21 Gaming blog reminds me of one thing I really like about the d20 system. The ability to take a baseline creature, like a gnoll, goblin or even a troll, and turn it into something else entirely. Well maybe not entirely, but enough to keep players guessing, and to keep the game interesting and fresh. This is a nice write up of fun things to do with a troll, and a look at what changes as different templates are applied. They also briefly touch on the option of giving a monster class advancements.
My problem has always been understanding the whole ECL thing. What level is my monster now, what is the new encounter level…I guess I need to read the monster manual and DM guide again. In addition to what you can do just using the d20 SRD, you can also look at the Monster’s Handbook by Fantasy Flight Games for more information about changing monsters. DM’s, who like me, are not 100% familiar with what the d20 system can do should read this article.

Sean - thanks for the link! Glad you enjoyed the article. I may even run with the whole “ECL” question in a post in a week or two. - MetalJim
