Tagging on Board Game Geek

I am trying to re-acquaint myself with Board Game Geek and the features it has to offer.  I have been avoiding the site recently due to some issues i had with the way it is laid out, the way some of the features work, and also because there can be so much bickering.

I wanted to point out the “new” tag feature on the site.  I say new because I have not really actively used the site since it has been introduced.  I was playing around with it, trying to decide how I might use it, and decided to look at what others had done.  The big negative IMHO is the inability to use spaces in the tags.  It’s a shame really especially when you look at what the user ludosophicus has done with tags.   A very nice feature of the tags is that when you select a tag, lets say with 30 items, that you can see a list of the other tags those items have.  This allows you to further narrow the set by the tags.  Del.icio.us works the same way with tags.  What ludosophicus has done is to create a set of tags for game types, designers, box contents, number of players etc.  If you want to find a Kinizia game that plays 4 and lasts 45 minutes you could navigate his tag tree to get there.  Nicely done.  I think this certainly shows the power of tags in an environment such as BGG.

I will be looking at how I want to use tags myself, as I plan to spend more time on BGG in the coming months.  If you have not already add me as a friend on BGG.
