Got a few disks in the mail from Amazon today (I love Prime shipping). I have really been enjoying the music of Lovespirals recently, as well as the various podcasts/vidcasts by Anji Bee, and decided to add their CD’s to my collection. Anji Bee’s voice is pretty well known in the podcast and indie music circles, and is certainly worth checking out in speech or song.
One thing I am really enjoying about Lovespirals is instrumentalist Ryan Lum’s music. The tracks on the album Free & Easy are great from start to finish. You can hear some jazz mixed into a couple of the tracks, and it’s the subtle differences between the tracks musically that make it so great. I listen to a lot of music that would best be classified as electronica, and it is nice to hear the guitar and piano on these tracks. I also picked up Evanescence’s The Open Door
and, an odd purchase for me, 200 Km/H in the Wrong Lane
by the Russian pop Duo t.A.T.u.
I am a subscriber to the Yahoo Music Unlimited music service. This is a subscription based service that I pay for yearly, and it allows me to listen to any music I want (in the Yahoo collection) on my PC and on my mobile device. I like the service, I find a ton of new artists, and can often listen to artists that I hear on podcasts like Anji Bee’s Chillcast or Hungry Lucy’s Sonic Spotlight. Up to this point I have typically just listened using the Yahoo service (e.g. never buying the CD’s), but I am getting kind of annoyed with the DRM. So the new plan is to drop my subscription with Yahoo down to the level where I can listen online, but do not have the synch or togo option. When I find an artist or band I really like I will by the CD. Music CD’s are pretty much the only media left that is DRM free. I might as well take advantage of that fact. Regardless of this decision, I must say that I really am quite happy with the subscription service from Yahoo and I am impressed with the selection of both independent and older music that is available.
While I am on the subject of Music, you should check out the site iLike.com. It’s a new social music recommendation service, that seems to work pretty well. It’s not really made for an IPOD/iTunes hating guy like myself, but I have a profile there nevertheless. Add me as a friend if you stop by.
