FeedDemon 2.1 RC 2 & Ma.gnolia

I want to start by saying that I am very happy with my decision to purchase and stick with FeedDemon as my RSS Reader. You may recall I was a bit taken aback by the release of Google Reader 2.0 just a day after I purchased FeedDemon. Since that time Nick Bradbury, the creator of FeedDemon, has been busy working on FD 2.1. The changes in this version are quite simply amazing. In many ways, the best of Google’s reader are showing up in a very stable Windows application. I am hopeful that the folks at Newsgator have some updates and enhancements coming for the online reader at Newsgator, which should further solidify my decision. My main reason for writing today is to let people know about a new feature in FD 2.1 which allows you to customize the SendTo function. The SendTo function has been limited to Del.icio.us in the past, but has not been made customizable to allow for any site with a URL based bookmarklet to be accessed from FeedDemon. This means that Ma.gnolia users can post articles directly from FeedDemon very easily. A big thanks to Glenn Slaven and Nick for some quick blog/forum posts to give more information about how this all works. Creating a Ma.gnolia SendTo item is pretty easy. Follow these steps and you should be ready to go.

  1. Open your text editor of choice (NotePad, Tinn ).
  2. Copy the following text into a blank file.
    http://ma.gnolia.com/bookmarklet/add?url={url}&title={title}” />
  3. Save the file to the C:\Program Files\FeedDemon\Data\SendTo directory. I called the file magnolia.xml. The name is not important, but the xml extension is.
  4. Close and re-open FeedDemon and your Ma.gnolia option should be available.

Pretty slick little feature. You can check out all of the changes in 2.1 by looking at the release notes.

  1. Thanks for blogging this, Sean - glad you’re enjoying the new version!

BTW, I think you need to make the tokens in the template attribute lowercase instead of uppercase (ie: {url} instead of {URL}).

Thanks for catching that Nick. I had them typed that way in my XML file, not sure how they ended up incorrectly here.
