As many people already know, Flickr rolled out a new geotagging/mapping feature today. A very slick interface allows you to drag pictures to any location on a map and they are tagged with the geographical information for that area. You can tag single, or groups of pictures using the organizer feature which makes things pretty easy, even with a large collection of pictures.
I have been having great fun with it so far today, and you can take a look at my current map.but currently have my geotag info marked as friends and family only. I am not sure if that will change or not, I think it will. Most of my pictures are public in Flickr.
The map uses Yahoo’s map service, no surprise there, and has a good level of detail when you zoom. I actually placed pictures taken at particular Disney World Attractions on the actual attraction on the map by zooming in all the way. The Flickr team has done a nice job on the UI, and allow you to filter by user and/or group to show pictures on a map. The only place I didn’t see map detail information was on the pictures detail page.
Overall, this is a fun new feature on Flickr, and I will be geo-tagging my pictures going forward. I have a whole crop of Disney pictures from the trip I just returned from that need uploading.
