Out of the Box, Into the box November 12, 2005
A new weekly post serving as a wrap up to the weeks gaming, especially lunch time gaming at work. The post will briefly cover what games went to work with me this week as well as what was played at home. I will also take a brief look at what new games will be going to work next week, and which games are carried over for another week.
The week of 11/6 - 11/12 was pretty active for the lunch time gang. 4 games were in the box this week: Ingenious, Metro, Through the Desert and Carcassonne.
Metro and Through the Desert were the clear favorites this week. Ingenious and Carcassonne did not get as much table time and are out of the box. I think that Ingenious was actually well received. We played an 8 player game, 4 teams of 2, and I think the game ran a bit long. Ingenious is still a favorite of Melissa and I, and I think it will be back in the box in the future. Carcassonne was played with the base game and river expansion, and I also think it was well received. I heard a few rumblings about the power of farms, so I think I will bring in Carcassonne the City at a later time and give that one a try.
We have a pretty cutt hroat playing style at work, and Metro is a good game to allow that style of play. I plan to write a full review of Metro sometime this week, it is certainly a hot game for us right now. Through the Desert is one of the first really good strategy games, something more than a lightweight game, that we have played. We played twice in one day, and I think everyone really liked it. The first game we played I forgot, or didn’t know, about the rule for removing 1 caravan leader per player. We played with all 5. The board was pretty crowded, but I don’t think that the outcome of the game was severely damaged. The second game we played was a 3 player, and I managed to enclose a HUGE area early in the game, it basically sealed my victory. Still the game was a huge success, and pastel camels are always a bonus.
For this week Ingenious and Carcassonne are out of the box. Metro and Through the Desert will stay in. I will also be adding Rumis, Nexus Ops, Submarine, and Wings of War.
